Robert Towne, screenwriter of “Chinatown,” dies at the age of 89

Towne also wrote The Last Detail, Shampoo and the first two Mission Impossible films

Robert Towne, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Chinatowndied at the age of 89.

Towne died on Monday, July 1, at his home, his publicist confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Towne is from Los Angeles, California and began his career as a screenwriter for television shows such as Breaking point, The outer limitsAnd The man from UNCLE. He later took on the role of a script doctor and revised scripts, including Bonnie and Clyde And The Godfather.

In a three-year period between 1973 and 1975, Towne received three consecutive Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay for The final detail, ChinatownAnd shampoowon in 1974 for Chinatown.

Towne’s other notable screenplays included tequila Sunrise (which he also directed), Days of Thunderand the first two Impossible mission Movies.

Later in his career, Towne worked as a consulting producer for mad Men.
