Mets player Brandon Nimmo breaks his silence about fainting spell in hotel

Brandon Nimmo missed a New York Mets game on Monday for only the fourth time this season, as he was unavailable following a strange early morning incident. Nimmo woke up in his hotel room outside Washington DC early Monday morning and passed out in the bathroom shortly after experiencing cramping and nausea.

After a hospital stay and several tests, Nimmo was released Monday afternoon and appears to have suffered nothing serious. He did not suffer a concussion and is expected to be available for the Mets on Tuesday.

“I’ve never passed out,” he said, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “There’s never been a moment in my life that I can’t come back from. It’s a weird feeling.”

The Mets are relieved to have gotten another good deal from their starting left fielder after he performed so well in June. Nimmo finished the month with an OPS over 1.000 in 23 games. He had a batting average of .315 with 13 extra-base hits, 21 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He is one of 10 baseball players with 50 runs and 50 RBIs this season.

Brandon Nimmo can’t remember everything about the incident, but is glad he escaped unscathed except for a cut on his forehead.

“It can happen once in a lifetime and you never have to deal with it again,” Nimmo said. “I asked them, ‘Is there anything I can do to make sure this doesn’t happen again?’ And they said, ‘No.’ Sometimes a perfect storm happens. What I understood is … when the blood pressure drops, the brain loses blood for about a second. And then you’re out.

“I probably wasn’t unconscious for very long. But long enough to fall and do a little damage.”

Mets stay hot with extra-inning win to start July

Few teams were better than the Mets in June, and they’ll look to carry that momentum into July as New York plays its best baseball of the year. After a 16-8 month, the Mets kicked off July with a thrilling win in the opener of their series against the Washington Nationals.

Every Mets starter got a hit and New York got back to .500 with a 9-7 win in 10 innings. The Mets scored six runs in the extra inning thanks to home runs from JD Martinez and a red-hot Jose Iglesias, interspersed with an RBI triple from Francisco Alvarez.

However, the Nats did not give up without a fight and scored the tying point in the 10th inning. The Mets were able to open July with a win, their first victory on the first of the month in 2024.

The Mets will now enter the second half of the season officially beginning on Tuesday with a 41-41 record. New York will need several miracles to catch the Philadelphia Phillies in the battle for the NL East crown, but the Mets are in the thick of the race for the National League wild card.

Although they are still underdogs, the Mets are one and a half games out of a playoff spot. The St. Louis Cardinals currently hold the last wild card spot in the NL after winning seven of their last ten games.

New York’s schedule for the next three weeks gives the team a chance to grab one of those wild-card spots. Until facing the Yankees on July 23, the Mets won’t play a team with a current winning record. They close out the unofficial first half against the Colorado Rockies before ending the All-Star break with a four-game set at Miami and the struggling Marlins.
