Environmental impact assessment of a pig farm in Mérida suspended due to citizen complaints

On June 27, the Secretariat for Sustainable Development (SDS) accepted the citizen’s complaint against the “Santa María” pig farm, operated by the Chumoxil company, owned by Oswaldo Loret from Mola Coldwell.

This measure led to the temporary suspension of the Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA) evaluation process.

The complaint, filed by a resident of Santa María Chí, highlights numerous environmental violations resulting from the farm’s operations.

The allegations include, among others, the lack of an environmental impact assessment for the activities, the emission of environmentally harmful greenhouse gases and problems related to inadequate wastewater management.

Based on this admission, SDS instructed the Department of Environmental Assessment to suspend the pending MIA assessment and scheduled an inspection visit to verify the allegations.

This measure came after the SDS published the “Granja Santa María” project in the Official Gazette of the State of Yucatán on May 30, 2024, and invited the public to submit comments and suggestions for mitigation as part of a public consultation phase.

On May 16, 2024, the Third District Court of Yucatán issued a definitive stay in the amparo process initiated by Wilberth Alfonso Nahuat Puc, Subcommissioner of Santa María Chi, prohibiting the SDS from issuing permits to the MIA and carrying out supervisory actions on the pig farm.

The municipality of Santa María Chí continues to closely monitor developments in this case, while environmental authorities continue the relevant investigations to protect the natural environment and the health of residents.
