Pedestrians in Charlotte and Burlington hit and killed by the same Amtrak train

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two people have died, one in Charlotte, after being struck by the same Amtrak train about 113 miles and 4.5 hours apart, officials confirmed to Queen City News on Friday.

At around 12:45 a.m. Friday, a person was struck by Amtrak train 79 from New York City to Charlotte on Old Concord Road near Rocky River Road in northeast Charlotte, officials said.

Amtrak says none of the 106 passengers or crew on board were injured. Local law enforcement is working with Amtrak to investigate the incident.

Hours earlier, on Thursday around 8:10 p.m., a pedestrian was struck by a train on the railroad tracks west of York Road toward Oak Avenue in Burlington, according to Burlington police.

Daniel Cameron Wagoner, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene in Burlington. The victim in the Charlotte incident has not been identified.

Queen City News contacted Amtrak and confirmed that it was also train 79.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, trespassing is the leading cause of fatal railroad-related accidents in the United States.
