1 dead and 2 injured after accident on Lake Michigan Drive

According to police, the accident occurred when two cars collided and one of them crossed the center line.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Michigan – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) said they were called to a three-vehicle crash in Tallmadge Twp. just after 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in which one car burst into flames while the driver was still inside.

According to police, a 2021 Dodge Charger driven by a 42-year-old from Grand Rapids and a 2005 Jeep driven by a 23-year-old from Middleville were both traveling east on Lake Michigan Drive near Trillium.

The two vehicles collided, causing the Dodge Charger to cross the center line and collide with a 2008 Pontiac driven by a 27-year-old Grand Rapids resident who was traveling westbound.

Police did not disclose which car caught fire, but said the driver was rescued from the vehicle and the fire was extinguished.

The driver of the Pontiac died from his injuries. The driver of the Dodge was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries.

Lake Michigan Drive was closed for several hours while police investigated the accident and emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
