Check out the new suspension bridge over Horseman Creek at Lake Weyba!

Sunshine Coast Council has made the existing trails at Lake Weyba more accessible by installing four footbridges, fire trails and a 24 meter suspension bridge.

The suspension bridge over Horseman Creek forms the conclusion of the foreshore nature trail that connects Lake Weyba to Peregian.

The three sections of the trail are located at the trailheads with signposted directions:

• Charlotte drive to Lake Weyba

• Lakewood Drive to Barbara Road

• Annie Drive to Barbara Road.

The improvement work also included three signposts, 25 signposts and the resurfacing of one kilometer of the fire road.

Access to the trails is graded 4 in the National Grading System.

This is intended for longer, rougher and steeper trails that are not always well signed or provide a clear trail. Level 4 trails are for experienced bushwalkers.

Sunshine Coast Council is proud to partner with the Australian Government, which has contributed $300,000 through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Sunshine Coast Council Ward 9 councilor Maria Suarez welcomed the completion of the suspension bridge which completed work on the Lake Weyba waterfront path.

“We work with our community to promote and improve our environment and quality of life,” Cr Suarez said.

“This stunning suspension bridge adds an extra touch of adventure to the Lake Weyba waterfront trail for experienced hikers.

“The trail is subject to seasonal flooding and tides and can become boggy after rainfall.

“There is a lot of vegetation obscuring the route.

“It’s not for the faint of heart, but with this amazing suspension bridge it’s definitely worth the effort.”

Federal MP for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program had helped local councils cover the costs of projects to create jobs, promote new opportunities and improve amenities in local communities .

“Projects such as the new suspension bridge over Horseman Creek at Lake Weyba were selected by council based on its priorities,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The new bridge provides an additional attraction to the Lake Weyba Foreshore Trail, allowing people to enjoy the beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

“I encourage everyone to enjoy everything the lake and trail have to offer.”

Dogs must be kept on a leash and all infrastructure is designed for pedestrians only.

The project will be fully completed by May 15, 2024, depending on weather conditions.

Lake Weyba is recognized as a wetland of national importance and the community enjoys the shore for picnicking, hiking and launching watercraft.

It is a shallow tidal lake used primarily by shallow-draft boats such as catamarans, kayaks, canoes, kitesurfers, paddleboards and small tinnies.

An existing nature trail winds along the shore and is used by horse riders and hikers.
