EMSA issues second medical heat warning of 2024 for Tulsa area | News

TULSA, Oklahoma – Tulsa is battling high temperatures.

In a press release, EMSA announced that it had issued its second medical heat warning of 2024 for the Tulsa region.

Since 9:30 p.m. Sunday, EMSA responded to five calls for suspected heat-related illnesses in the Tulsa service area, transporting three patients to the hospital. Since Friday, EMSA responded to eight calls for heat-related illnesses, transporting four patients to local hospitals.

EMSA has compiled some recommendations to be observed at high temperatures:

  • Before hydrating: Drink plenty of water and/or electrolytes.
  • When outdoors, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, hats, and take breaks in the shade.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Stay near air-conditioned areas.
  • Use the buddy system outdoors and check on your elderly neighbors.
  • Always carry a mobile phone with you.

EMSA said it issues a medical heat alert when paramedics respond to five or more heat-related emergency calls within a 24-hour period. The heat alert will remain in effect until temperatures and/or emergency calls drop significantly.

There is also a heat warning in place for all counties in FOX23’s coverage area from Monday noon to 9 p.m.
