Police arrested a Greenwood County, South Carolina, teacher’s aide for unlawful conduct toward a child, officials say

A Greenwood County teacher’s assistant has been arrested for unlawful neglect of a child, officials said. On April 30, officers were directed by a Lakeview Elementary School employee to investigate an incident from the previous day. Officers viewed the video and determined that an assistant teacher was violently pushing, pulling and dragging a student into a special needs classroom. The Greenwood School District said, “Ms. Gilbert is no longer employed by our school district. Please understand that this matter remains a concern. The ongoing investigation is ongoing and our school district cannot comment further on personnel matters. Our school district is fully cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation of this matter. Over the past week, officials reviewed classroom footage and identified multiple incidents involving the same teacher’s assistant and four different students. Early Wednesday morning, Gilbert was charged with four counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.

The Greenwood School District said, “Ms. Gilbert is no longer employed by our school district. Please understand that this matter remains an ongoing investigation and our district cannot comment further on personnel matters. Our school district is cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities as they investigate this matter.

Over the past week, officers reviewed classroom footage and found multiple incidents involving the same teacher’s aide and four different students.

Early Wednesday morning, Gilbert was charged with four counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.
