Cleveland City Hall closed again today due to ransomware attack

CLEVELAND, Ohio – City Hall will remain closed again today as problems continue as a result of a ransomware attack on the city’s computer systems.

The ransomware attack was uncovered more than a week ago, and City Hall has been closed during that time as the city grapples with the aftermath. The city has not said how long the shutdown might drag on, but in other U.S. cities that have fallen victim to similar attacks, efforts have taken weeks, even months. Some cities have paid millions to restore their systems.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Ohio National Guard Cyber Reserve Unit assisted the city’s IT authorities following the attack.

A news release from the city on Monday said residents can continue to use some services online, such as applications for building and housing permits, disclosure certificates and lead certificates. Residents who wish to request birth or death certificates can submit applications online to the Ohio Department of Health.

“We thank the public for their patience and understanding during this difficult time,” the city said in a statement. “City Hall remains committed to ensuring the security and integrity of our systems and services as we continue to recover from the cyberattacks.”
