2 dead in shootings over the weekend

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – After two fatal shootings over the weekend, a Memphis woman says only a higher power can help the city and its crime rate.

Two people are dead after separate shootings in South Memphis and Frayser.

“Every day you wake up and hear that someone has been killed. And I find that very disgusting,” said Louise Lynn, a Memphis resident.

Memphis police say the shooting of Frayser occurred shortly after 4 a.m.

They say the victim arrived at a fire station in Overton Crossing with a gunshot wound. However, the shooting occurred in Smith Ridge and Smith Ridge Cove.

“I’ve lived here for almost 50 years and it’s never been as bad as it is now,” Lynn said.

The victim was taken to Regional One Hospital where he later died. But this was not the only death that weekend.

Shortly after 5 a.m., police rushed to an accident on Lamar Avenue in South Memphis, where they found a man dead from a gunshot wound.

Lynn says everyone needs to believe in a higher power to end crime in Memphis.

“CJ Davis can’t do anything unless she has God in her, and neither can Paul Young,” she said. “A lot of times when elections are coming up and stuff, they’re sweeping the streets, they’re doing all kinds of things. But when that’s over, you don’t see them again until the next election.”

According to the Memphis Data Hub, there have been 115 murders and 150 homicides so far this year. These numbers do not include recent gun deaths.

Lynn says it’s time to act.

“Everyone says we have to do something about it – stop this crime. How are we going to stop the crime if we don’t know God? Only God can stop it, but we have to trust in him,” Lynn said.

Police say both shootings remain under investigation. If you have any information, please call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
