Popular Manitou Springs attraction Rainbow Falls reopens after rockfall

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — A popular natural attraction in Manitou Springs is reopening after several years — now with a new parking system and improved safety precautions.

El Paso County officials said the site’s closure in 2021 was due to several incidents of rocks falling from the cliffs onto cars in the parking lot.

The attraction has now reopened. The parking lot is cordoned off with sturdy barriers to protect visitors and vehicles from falling rocks.

Instead, a new parking lot and shuttle system will be available. Visitors can park their vehicles off Highway 24 and Serpentine Drive, also known as “Higginbotham Flats.” Shuttles will run nonstop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday from June 14 to September 1. Parking and shuttle service cost a total of $20.

“We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors to Rainbow Falls,” said Todd Marts, executive director of El Paso County Parks & Community Services, in a press release. “These proactive measures not only address parking concerns, but also ensure our visitors can continue to enjoy Rainbow Falls.”

The site has been a staple of Manitou Springs since the mid-1800s. Visitors to Rainbow Fall are encouraged to make reservations online before their visit.
