UVA denies degrees to students arrested during May 4 protests

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The University of Virginia is facing criticism for withholding degrees from four fourth-year graduates who were involved in the May 4 protests. Those students were among 11 students arrested and now face internal disciplinary proceedings by the university’s Judiciary Committee.

Although the original trespassing charges were dismissed and the university has lifted the trespassing orders, the students remain in limbo. UVA professor Laura Goldblatt highlighted the university’s handling of the situation, stating, “It is clear that none of these students pose a threat to the UVA community and that they exercised their constitutionally protected right to protest.”

Goldblatt emphasized the need for a quick resolution, noting the additional stress and uncertainty this situation has placed on students. Faculty members remain committed to students and are working toward a fair and timely resolution.
