22% of cybersecurity professionals have ignored a warning

The cybersecurity preparedness of security leaders was analyzed in a recent report by Coro. According to the survey, 73% of security professionals at small and medium-sized companies have missed, ignored or failed to respond to critical security alerts. Respondents cited staff shortages and lack of time as the top reasons.

The report found that cybersecurity experts have the following concerns:

  • 35% of respondents admitted to missing a safety warning at work.
  • 31% have reduced the sensitivity of a security tool
  • 26% have completely muted a security warning
  • 25% did not respond to a high priority alert and 22% completely ignored a security alert.

Respondents provided feedback on the most time-consuming parts of their day, including:

  • Monitoring security platforms
  • Managing and updating endpoints and agents
  • Vulnerability management or patching
  • Installing, configuring and integrating new security tools.

According to the report, respondents spend an average of four hours and 43 minutes per day managing their cybersecurity tools, with their security stack comprising an average of 11.55 tools. Fifty-two percent of respondents said monitoring security platforms was the most time-consuming task, followed by patching vulnerabilities.

Respondents estimated that it takes 4.22 months to get a new cybersecurity tool up and running, as well as the same amount of time needed to install, configure, train staff, and integrate it into the existing security stack. On average, respondents manage 2029.91 endpoint security agents installed on 655.92 endpoint devices. 53 percent of respondents have to deal with updates from the vendors of these endpoint agents on a daily or weekly basis. 85 percent of respondents say they plan to consolidate their tools in the next 12 months, with the most important benefit cited being an improvement in their security posture.
