Officer Seth Wingfield, an 8-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau assigned to the North Precinct and the Special Emergency Reaction Team

The sex offender injured in a shooting in the Russell neighborhood has been released from the hospital and taken to jail on several charges, including attempted murder of police officers.

On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, a Multnomah County grand jury indicted Patrick Myers on charges of attempted first-degree murder (two counts), menacing with a firearm (two counts), and unlawful use of a weapon (two counts). The charges are related to a shooting incident in the Russell neighborhood on May 29, 2024. In addition, Myers was released from the hospital and lodged in the Multnomah County Detention Center on the above charges and warrants.

The sex offender injured in a shooting incident in the Russell neighborhood has been identified as Patrick W. Myers, 44, of Portland. Myers is in police custody at a local hospital. After being treated for his injuries, he will be taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center.

The Portland Police Bureau would like to provide the public with a more comprehensive timeline of Wednesday’s incident.

4:06 a.m. The PPB Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with assistance from the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), begins executing a search warrant.

4:19 a.m. CNT begins more than an hour of communication with Myers to persuade him to surrender

6:06 a.m. Myers ends communication with CNT

6:08 a.m. Myers leaves the house armed with a rifle and is shot by a SERT member

6:14 a.m. Myers is taken into custody

6:15 a.m. A paramedic assigned to the SERT begins to provide assistance

6:25 a.m. Myers is taken to a local hospital

The PPB Homicide Unit, along with the Forensic Evidence Division (FED) and others, arrived at the scene to initiate the ongoing investigation.

The victim of a sex crimes investigation following an early morning shooting is expected to survive.

At approximately 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, detectives from the Portland Police Bureau’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with assistance from the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), began executing a search warrant on a home in the 2700 block of Northeast 137th Avenue. At 6:08 a.m., SERT members entered the front of the home. At this time, the suspect exited the home through the back armed with a rifle (photo attached) and was shot by a SERT member.

The suspect, a 44-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital where he is expected to survive. The search warrant executed Wednesday morning was tied to an indictment on the following charges: promoting sexual abuse of a child in the second degree (six counts) and promoting sexual abuse of an animal (one count).

No officers were injured in this incident. The member involved will be placed on paid administrative leave. This is standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.

Pursuant to the PPB’s instructions, Portland Police Department Homicide Detectives responded to the scene to begin the investigation.

Police Chief Bob Day also arrived at the scene and briefed Mayor Wheeler’s staff and the District Attorney’s Office on the investigation.

As part of the use of force review process, the bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and actions taken after the shooting. The case will be brought before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is comprised of community members, bureau members, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at approximately 5:05 a.m., detectives from the Portland Police Bureau’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with assistance from the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), were executing a search warrant in the 2700 block of Northeast 137th Avenue when an encounter occurred between an adult male and officers. The encounter ended in an officer-involved shooting. The adult male was injured and transported to an area hospital. His condition is unknown. No officers were injured.

Several roads in the area are closed and will remain closed for the duration of the investigation.
