First weather warning day for extreme heat

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A heat warning is in effect today for lower elevations in Arizona, including the greater Valley area. The warning goes into effect at 10 a.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. Thursday. Today, tomorrow and Thursday are the first days of weather.

Temperatures in the valley will rise from 21 to 25 degrees in the morning to 43 degrees in the afternoon with sunny skies and light winds. Tomorrow temperatures will be even hotter, with a record high of 46 degrees. On Thursday it will be almost as warm, at 44 degrees.

Another high air pollution warning is in effect today in Maricopa County due to ozone. Ozone can make breathing difficult, especially for people with asthma or other respiratory conditions.

A low pressure system is expected to move through the state overnight from Thursday to Friday, bringing with it changes in the weather. Temperatures in the valley will cool slightly to 42 degrees Celsius on Friday. In the higher elevations there is a possibility of rain and thunderstorms on both days. Gusty winds will also increase the risk of fires throughout the state.

Temperatures will rise over the weekend as the high pressure system strengthens again, with highs currently expected to reach 43 to 44 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday, Father’s Day.
