Police shoot man in nighttime incident in downtown Harrisburg

A man was shot and killed by police in downtown Harrisburg early Sunday morning after police said he opened fire on them.

According to a statement from city spokesman Matt Maisel, a Harrisburg city police officer and a Pennsylvania Capitol Police officer – along with that officer’s dog – were pursuing a man in the 200 block of South Street around 1:30 a.m.

The man fired several shots at the officers, who returned fire, killing the 22-year-old, the statement said. It was not immediately clear why officers tried to arrest the man or why he fled.

The police dog suffered a graze, but the two officers remained unharmed, Maisel said.

The Dauphin County Criminal Investigation Division, which is part of the county prosecutor’s office, is investigating the shooting.
