11th Cyclist of the Year Killed on Busy 11th Avenue

A Citi Bike rider was struck and killed by a truck driver on 11th Avenue in Midtown – a congested area that will not ease traffic even after Governor Hochul repeals the city toll.

According to the NYPD, the 32-year-old cyclist was struck by the 27-year-old driver of a delivery truck at the intersection of 11th Avenue and 50th Street at around 2:10 p.m. on Friday. The cyclist died at the scene, but the driver of the delivery truck remained on site. According to the NYPD, no immediate charges have been filed.

According to the Department of Transportation, the victim is the 11th cyclist killed on the city’s streets this year. While that number is lower than the 17 during the same period last year, it is significantly higher than the average of around five cyclist deaths at this point in the year in the Vision Zero era.

The Department of Transport also said 49 pedestrians have been killed so far this year, the second highest number since 2016.
