Northfield police chief takes vacation, officials say

The Northfield Police Department is currently under the leadership of an acting police chief; longtime police chief Bill Lustig is reportedly on indefinite leave.

Northfield Township Supervisor Patrick Brennan confirmed that Lustig recently took voluntary leave of absence but declined to comment further.

Deputy Police Chief Michael Hutensky is serving as acting chief until further notice, Brennan said. Hutensky has been with the Northfield Police Department for more than 20 years and held the positions of corporal and sergeant before his current post.

Lustig has been Northfield’s police chief since 2000. He began his service with the police in 1981, the same year he was tasked with implementing the Officer Friendly program, which aims to build relationships between the police and Northfield’s youth. Lustig is a graduate of Evanston Township High School and lives in Northfield.
