Expectant father, 20, dies after electric shock while trimming tree

A 20-year-old man expecting his first child died from an electric shock while pruning a tree on May 25.

In an email to PEOPLE, an Arlington police spokesperson said the victim, identified by the Tarrant County Coroner as Carl Blaylock III, was working on a tree with a chainsaw in Arlington, Texas, when he apparently struck a power line and was electrocuted.

According to authorities, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this time, we have no evidence that a crime was committed,” the Arlington police spokesman said in a statement. “This appears to be a very tragic accident.”

Authorities said Blaylock’s family members had to be kept away from police while firefighters worked to recover his body.

In a statement to PEOPLE, his family remembered Baylock as a hard-working man who was also an expectant father.

“The family of Carl David Blaylock III (aka Trey) is devastated by the tragic loss they suffered when Trey cut a power line hidden in a large tree,” the statement said. “He and his girlfriend Alyssa had just announced on Facebook that they are expecting a baby girl later this year.”

“Trey was the first in his family to graduate from Timber Creek High School and get his footing in the door, but he made money doing contract jobs. He would have made $100 in that job,” they added.

Lynn Amante, Blaylock’s step-grandmother, has started a GoFundMe campaign to pay for Blaylock’s cremation and set up a trust fund for his baby on the way.

“Words cannot express what a fine young man Trey was,” Amante wrote in a fundraiser message. “He was a part of our lives since he was a child. He leaves behind his devastated father, my daughter, his two sisters Jasmine and Mya, and his brother Kayson.”

In their statement, his family said they would always remember Trey “as a young man who loved his family, his dog and his dirt bike.”

“He worked hard and was polite and helpful to everyone,” they added. “Forever in our hearts.”

A service for Blaylock will be held Saturday, June 1, in Hurst, Texas.
