According to police, the victim was travelling from Bihar to Punjab with her young son to meet her husband. After getting off the train at New Delhi railway station on May 26, she visited Sadar Market. On the way back to the station in an e-rickshaw, the driver allegedly offered her a drink, after which she lost consciousness, Meena said. “According to her statement, the rickshaw driver took her to a remote area where he sexually assaulted her. When she resisted and tried to raise an alarm, the assailant hit her on the head with a brick,” Meena said.

“After she regained consciousness, she found that her mobile phone and Rs 3,000 in cash were missing,” he continued.

“We immediately launched an investigation, examined about 500 CCTV footage and came across a battery-operated rickshaw,” Meena added. A thorough search followed to identify and arrest the culprit, with about 150 rickshaw owners being questioned. On May 29, Umer was arrested and the woman’s mobile phone and the rickshaw used in the crime were recovered, Meena confirmed. According to police, Umer had been involved in a robbery before.

The police have filed a complaint under sections 376 (rape), 308 (attempt to murder), 328 (causing hurt with poison etc. with intent to commit offence) and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is on.
