Harris County Sheriff’s Chief of Staff arrested for violating protective order, MCSO says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Harris County Sheriff’s Chief of Staff Ed Gonzalez was arrested again Friday in The Woodlands after violating a restraining order, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the documents, MCSO officers arrested Spencer, 51, on May 24 at 3:54 p.m. for violating a restraining order. Officers were dispatched to a home in The Woodlands after receiving a call that Spencer was at the residence in violation of a restraining order.

According to police, when officers arrived, they found Spencer sitting in his car outside the home. He was detained while the protective order was checked. Spencer was arrested and taken to the Montgomery County Jail for violating the protective order.

The attorney representing Spencer, Murray Newman, sent the following statement to KPRC 2.

Mr. Spencer had just gone to his ex-wife’s home to pick up his younger son for a scheduled visit at the time of his arrest. There are no allegations of threats or harassment and he was waiting for his son in his car, which was parked on the street in front of the home, at the time of his arrest.

Spencer was charged in connection with a 2023 incident in which a teenager was injured. He posted $2,500 bail after turning himself in on a charge of injury to a child. According to court documents, the original incident occurred on September 15, 2023.

According to the documents, Spencer grabbed the then 14-year-old boy by his hoodie and hurled him against a bedroom wall. The boy fell and hit his head on a bed frame. The boy reportedly told police he ran down the stairs to escape, and Spencer grabbed a plastic gun case and threw it at him, causing it to fall down the stairs and land on his face. Spencer then allegedly grabbed the boy by his arms as he lay on the floor.

According to the documents, the teen had bruises on his back as well as multiple abrasions, bruises and a small hematoma on his skull. He also had multiple abrasions on his left wrist, right arm, back and face.

Newman made the following statement about the arrest:

It is unfortunate that in some cases in family court, one party will attempt to use the criminal justice system to gain an advantage in a non-criminal case, and we believe that is what happened here. Jason has fully cooperated with investigators in this matter and turned himself in this morning to address these allegations in court. We believe that as these allegations are examined more closely, the facts will show that he simply did not break the law. He loves his children and will not comment further on the facts of this case.
