Atlanta police release body camera footage of Emory protests

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Atlanta police have released body camera footage of pro-Palestinian protests at Emory University last month.

Police released more than two hours of body camera footage showing officers’ response to the protests. The videos can be seen here.

28 people were arrested during the protests. According to Emory University officials, protesters threw objects at police officers who asked them to leave campus. Police used handcuffs, restraints, stun guns and physical force to arrest some of the offenders, Emory officials said.

One protester was hit with a Taser, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The agency said the man resisted arrest, so officers stunned him in the stomach and right thigh for about five seconds each while he was on the ground.

At least 20 of the 28 people arrested were members of the Emory community, including students and faculty, including one professor. The school initially claimed that none of those arrested were affiliated with the university.

“They were doing nothing but being there, just existing. Let’s look at the evidence. Let’s watch the video. Did the students throw bottles and act violently towards the police to justify a level of reciprocal violence against these students? If so, show me the evidence,” said attorney Suri Chada Jiminez.

The protests led to votes of no confidence in Emory President Gregory Fenves from faculty and undergraduates.

Protesters also heckled Fenves during his graduation speech, which was moved 22 miles from campus for security reasons.
