Illinois police are accusing a man of shooting a neighbor in a hate crime

An Illinois man charged with attempted murder is now accused of committing a hate crime when police said he shot and wounded his neighbor in Lockport Township on Tuesday.

John P. Shadbar, 70, was arrested after the alleged shooting of a 45-year-old woman who remains in critical condition, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held in jail without bail.

Court records show Shadbar is facing nine felony counts, including hate crimes, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

After the shooting, about 45 miles southwest of Chicago, Shadbar entered his home where he barricaded himself, the agency said on Facebook. A crisis negotiator convinced him on the phone to get out with his hands up. He was taken into custody and questioned at the sheriff’s office.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest that exited the back. She has since undergone surgery for her injuries.

Officers seized five weapons from Shadbar’s home

Officers located and seized five weapons from Shadbar’s residence, including a shotgun, two handguns and two AK-47 rifles, one of which is believed to have been used in the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

Shadbar’s gun owner’s license was suspended in 1979 after he was arrested for a felony, the sheriff’s office said.

He appeared for his arraignment at the Will County Courthouse on Thursday and is scheduled to return May 23, records show.

The victim was a white woman with a black partner

Court documents identified the victim as a white woman who harassed and threatened Shadbar for years because she had a black partner, according to ABC News.

Shadbar allegedly directed racial slurs at both the woman and her children and threatened their lives, ABC News reported.

Last Tuesday, the victim was in her backyard with a friend and two small children when Shadbar began revving his motorcycle’s engine, records show. The victim responded by blowing an air horn, at which point Shadbar threw a bottle over the fence, used a racial slur and referred to death, ABC News reported.

USA TODAY has asked the Will County Sheriff’s Office for clarification on the hate crime charges.

The victim called police twice about Shadbar before the shooting

Before the shooting, police received two calls from the victim about minor issues with Shadbar, both of which were resolved, the sheriff’s office said.

She first called police in March to report that Shadbar was acting extremely agitated as he yelled at her and her children, police said.
