Scarborough rapist left woman feeling ‘raped, humiliated and totally worthless’

A sex offender raped a woman and left her feeling “hurt, humiliated and utterly worthless.”

Al Winfindale, 39, pleaded guilty to rape before the start of his trial and was sentenced to five years and five months in prison at York Crown Court on Friday, July 26. The court heard the attack took place in Scarborough and left the victim feeling violated, humiliated and completely worthless.

More than a year later, she is still shaken by the memory of the incident and has still not been able to tell her family what happened to her. In addition to the prison sentence, Winfindale, from Scarborough, was placed on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Nicholas Burton, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “I would like to pay my respects to the victim who has shown incredible strength in reporting this horrific crime and assisting this investigation. We urge any victims of sexual assault or rape to come forward. No matter when it happened, you will be listened to.

“We know it can be difficult, but we have specially trained staff to support you. As part of our support, we can put you in touch with a range of support services that can help you.”
