Atlanta United loses to Indy Eleven 2-1 in Lamar Hunt US Open Cup quarterfinals

Early in the second half, Atlanta tried to build more from the back. They made their first substitutions of the night. Tristan Muyumba, Tyler Wolff and Caleb Wiley replaced Dax McCarty, Luke Brennan and Matt Edwards respectively in the 57th minute. Wiley, who was named to the United States men’s Olympic team for the 2024 Paris Olympics, received a standing ovation for the 17.

Edwards, who recently signed a homegrown contract with Atlanta, made his MLS debut for Real Salt Lake’s first team.

Brennan quickly made his mark after coming on. His header in the 64th minute nearly tied the score for the 5-Stripes. A series of scoring chances came in the 71st and 72nd minutes. McCarty’s tight shot was deflected by one of the Indy Eleven players. Daniel Rios replaced Lobjanidze in the 73rd minute. Rios has scored three goals in his last four games.

The replacements seemed to inject a new sense of urgency into the 5-cushion lineup, but time was running out.

In the second half, against all odds, Indy scored their second goal of the game. In the 83rd minute, the ball was deflected by McCarty who scored an own goal. Atlanta made their final substitution of the night in the 87th minute, when Noah Cobb replaced Stian Gregersen.

Firmino continued his goalscoring streak at Fifth Third Stadium in the Open Cup match when in the first minute of five minutes of extra time he scored Atlanta United’s only goal.

Despite the hurried efforts in the end, the 5-Stripes did not qualify for the Open Cup.
