Semi-trailer carrying vegetables knocks down guardrail and lands under overpass in Tukwila – KIRO 7 News Seattle

TUKWILA – Traffic on northbound Interstate 5 (I-5) was backed up for hours after a tractor-trailer loaded with vegetables struck a guardrail and came to a stop under the South 178th Street overpass.

At around 8:40 a.m. on Sunday, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) informed drivers that the right lane north of 188th Street was closed due to an accident.

At the scene of the accident, a semi-trailer truck was found under the overpass after the railing protecting the overpass had been removed.

At around 9 a.m., the police closed the two right lanes so that emergency services had space to help the driver.

The semi-trailer was badly damaged and the vegetable load fell out of the damaged trailer.

According to Washington State Patrol (WSP) officer Rick Johnson, the accident resulted in one serious injury.

At 10:45 a.m., WSDOT announced that only the right lane was closed, but traffic was already backed up for nearly two miles.

Eventually another tractor-trailer arrived to help transfer the remaining cargo and begin the cleanup.

It is currently not known whether the overpass has sustained damage and is still open to traffic.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
