Iranian warship sinks after “accident”

An Iranian warship sank on Sunday afternoon; authorities said it was an “accident,” state-affiliated media reported.

The Sahand “suffered an accident … and parts of the destroyer went underwater” in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, Mehr news agency reported, without giving further details.

The Iranian Student News Agency published a similar report, citing media close to the Defense Ministry.

Further details on the nature of the incident were not available.

The Sahand, a missile destroyer, was built by Iranian naval shipbuilder Nedaja and launched in 2012.

It was named after another ship that was sunk by the US military during a day-long clash in the Arabian Sea in 1988.

This is a developing story…
