According to the Maui Fire Department (MFD), Maui Fire Department crews were busy responding to four fires this week.

A brush fire that broke out May 5 on fallow agricultural land adjacent to the Maui Veterans Highway was officially declared extinguished around 7 p.m. Tuesday evening, the MFD said of the estimated 30-acre fire that burned for two days.

“We responded to two wildfires in the Piihana Farms area of ​​Wailuku today (Wednesday).” The MFD announced this in a press release. “The first fire was reported at 10:11 a.m. and extinguished at 12:55 p.m. It affected approximately one hectare of bushland and an abandoned vehicle. A second fire was reported at 1:12 p.m. and was not extinguished until 3:25 p.m. It was again bushes and another abandoned vehicle in another area.”

According to MFD, none of the fires threatened any structures. The cause of both fires is currently under investigation.

At 8:13 a.m. Wednesday, MFD personnel responded to a report of smoke coming from a third-floor unit at the Harbor Lights Condominiums in Kahului.

“Emergency crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a unit on the third floor and filling hallways and stairwells. Crews extended hose lines and fought the fire while other crews worked to evacuate residents of the building.” The incident report reads:

The fire was reportedly brought under control at 8:27 a.m. The emergency services then worked to complete the extinguishing work and remove the smoke from the building. The fire was completely extinguished by 9:25 a.m. and was contained to the kitchen area of ​​the original unit.

One resident was displaced by the fire and was receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. No injuries were reported. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to the unit and $10,000 to its contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Engine 1 (Wailuku), Engine 10 and Rescue 10 (Kahului), a battalion chief and a fire investigator all responded to the incident.
