REPORT: ‘Little recent interest’ in Atlanta Hawks star

For most of last season, the Atlanta Hawks were expected to part ways with former All-NBA point guard Trae Young this summer. However, it seems less likely that Young has played his last game for the Hawks. The team recently sent Young’s guard partner Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans. Additionally, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, the trade market for Young “is colder than ever.” Lowe also mentioned that the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, two teams linked to Young, aren’t very interested in acquiring the 25-year-old.

“Young is powerful enough to keep the Hawks around .500, and they have little incentive to collapse as long as the Spurs control their first-round picks through 2027 thanks to the initial Murray trade. The easiest way to get those picks back is to trade Young to the Spurs, but San Antonio hasn’t shown much interest in doing so recently, sources said. The Spurs understand the potential value of those picks, and they seem (for now) to prefer holding them hostage rather than trading them to Atlanta.”

“The Lakers have also shown little interest in Young of late, sources said. That could change if the price drops with LA. But the market for Young is colder than ever.”

San Antonio Spurs Don’t Need Trae Young Anymore

The idea of adding Young was an intriguing one from San Antonio’s perspective. Pairing an elite offensive leader with Victor Wembanyama would have added a new element to the team. However, in April, NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin reported that the Spurs didn’t see the Hawks star as a “good fit” next to Wembanyama.

“Spurs fans have been very excited about the team potentially being interested in trading Trae Young this summer, as he is the most highly touted point guard likely to be available. League sources told NBC Sports not to bet on that possibility, as San Antonio does not see Young as a good fit for Wembanyama going forward.”

Additionally, the Spurs recently signed legendary point guard Chris Paul as a free agent. With Paul in the mix, it doesn’t make sense for the Spurs to consider a trade for Young.

The Los Angeles Lakers are unlikely to make a big move this summer, including a trade for Trae Young.

Earlier this season, rumors suggested the Lakers were looking to add a third star to go along with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Young’s name was one of the most common in the rumors. But nothing came of it. Recently, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said he doesn’t expect the team to make a major move this summer.

“They’ll certainly use them if there’s a player that makes sense on a bigger deal, but right now they’re not involved in any deals that would allow them to get a third star. They look at the landscape of this league and realize that the three-star model, with that salary cap, either doesn’t work or it’s a lot harder to implement.”

The offseason is still young and things can change over the summer. However, as things stand right now, it appears Young will stick around for at least another year.
