Pueblo coroner identifies women killed in shootings on June 27 and 28

Two women shot in separate incidents in late June were identified by the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office Friday afternoon.

Francisca Maria Gonzalez, 37, of Pueblo, was shot near the 1700 block of East Ash Street on June 27; Elaine J. Masias, 65, also of Pueblo, was shot the following day in the 300 block of East Northern Avenue.

Both shootings are being investigated as homicides and the next of kin of both women have been notified, according to the coroner’s office. Her death marked the 13th anniversary of her death.^th and 14^th Murders in the city of Pueblo so far in 2024.

Police were first called to the 200 block of South Portland Avenue around 12:35 a.m. on June 27 after the department’s ShotSpotter system reported gunshots.

A short time later, police received information that a shooting victim, later identified as Gonzalez, was at the intersection of East Fifth Street and Reading Avenue, about five blocks from the crime scene.

Police found Gonzalez near the intersection with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital.

During their investigation, Pueblo police obtained footage of the suspected suspect vehicle, which they say was also involved in a drive-by shooting near 13.^th and West Street “just minutes” after Gonzalez’s murder.

The following day, shortly after 9:30 p.m., officers were called to another shooting in the 300 block of East Northern Avenue.

The officers arrived at the scene a few minutes after receiving the emergency call and found two injured women.

A woman, later identified as Masias, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. The second woman, who suffered less serious injuries, was also taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Pueblo police continue to investigate both shootings. No suspects have been publicly identified in either case.
