Suspended QB Chad Kelly practices with the Toronto Argonauts on Thursday

Suspended Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly is on the field Thursday at rookie camp in Guelph, Ontario, working with the team’s first-year quarterbacks, TSN’s Matthew Scianitti reports.

Scianitti adds that the Argonauts will not say whether Kelly will appeal his nine-game suspension handed down earlier this week. According to the league, it is at the team’s discretion whether Kelly attends practice on Thursday.

General manager Pinball Clemons will speak to reporters after practice on Thursday, Scianitti reports.

Kelly was suspended for at least nine regular-season games on Tuesday for violating the league’s gender-based violence policy. Kelly is also suspended for the team’s two preseason games.

The league made this decision following an investigation into a lawsuit brought by a former strength and conditioning coach against the player and the club. TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor wrote on Tuesday that Kelly and his agent were undecided about appealing the ruling.

Kelly must undergo a confidential assessment by an independent expert and attend mandatory counseling sessions conducted by a gender-based violence expert.

Both counseling sessions and evaluations must be completed satisfactorily before the CFL will consider Kelly’s reinstatement, the league added in a statement. Otherwise, the league reserves the right to change its discipline.

The 30-year-old quarterback was the league’s Most Outstanding Player in 2023, leading the Argos to a 16-2 record in the regular season.
