10-year-old girl killed by shooting on Cleveland’s West Side

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities said a 10-year-old girl was shot dead on Cleveland’s West Side Thursday night.

In a statement, police said dispatch received a call about shots fired in the 3200 block of West 125th Street around 7:10 p.m. When police arrived, they found the girl injured. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died.

Police did not release any details about the incidents. The statement said there had been no arrests and that the homicide squad was investigating.

The child’s shooting came several hours after a Cleveland man shot and killed a police officer, according to authorities. Jamieson Ritter died at 4 a.m. Thursday while attempting to serve an arrest warrant on 24-year-old De’Lawnte Hardy in the 1500 block of East 80th Street.

Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said Ritter, 27, was one of eight to 10 officers who attempted to arrest Hardy on aggravated assault charges early Thursday morning.

Hardy tried to flee the scene on a bicycle, then pulled out a gun and opened fire as officers pursued him, Todd said. Hardy is charged with aggravated murder and is scheduled to appear in Cleveland Municipal Court Friday morning.
