There have been reports of massive looting and property damage during youth-led demonstrations in several cities across the country. Some protesters said the cities had been infiltrated by “thugs.”

“Security forces across the country have singled out suspects committing criminal activities under the guise of protests and taken them into custody,” said a statement from the Criminal Investigation Department posted on X (formerly Twitter) late Tuesday.

A total of 204 suspects were arrested in the capital Nairobi, and another 68 in various other parts of the country.

“The DCI has also deployed diligent investigators in the affected areas to track suspects who were caught on closed circuit television cameras and mobile phone recordings brutally robbing, stealing and destroying the properties and businesses of innocent citizens,” the statement added.
