NFL reporter strongly believes in Josh Allen and Buffalo Bills offense heading into 2024

It was Thursday, April 26, 2018, when the Buffalo Bills made a historic change by trading up from the 12th overall pick to the 7th overall pick with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and selecting quarterback Josh Allen. The Bills had been in a quarterback drought for a very long time, dating back to the days of Jim Kelly and Doug Flutie. While Tyrod Taylor had enjoyed some success with the Bills the previous two seasons, he was not a franchise quarterback and most fans knew it. Sean McDermott was entering his second year as the Bills head coach and the 2018 NFL Draft featured some serious quarterback talent with Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Lamar Jackson and of course, the top pick of that class in Allen.

There’s no doubt that Allen had some growing pains. He played sloppily and turned the ball over. At the same time, he was drafted into a horrible situation but still showed flashes of greatness despite a weak offensive line and some of the worst wide receiver help he’s ever had. From 2018 to 2019, Allen showed a jump in production with a better supporting cast around him and managed to get the Bills back to the playoffs, but unfortunately lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the Houston Texans in the wild card round.

In 2020, the NFL became aware of Allen’s identity and his performance since then. Without Aaron Rodgers’ MVP season he had for the Packers (51 total touchdowns and only 5 interceptions), Allen would have easily won the MVP award without a doubt. He took the next step to a massive leap forward in Year 3 that helped the Bills not only win the division for the first time in 25 years, but also make it to the championship game of the AFC.

Since then, Allen has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league and has helped the Bills offense remain one of the best units in the league so far. There’s no doubt that the offense will look different in 2024. Stefon Diggs is gone since he was traded to Houston. Gabe Davis left in free agency and is now in Jacksonville. Even center Mitch Morse was released and also signed with Jacksonville. Brandon Beane has built an interesting receiver room this offseason that includes Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Chase Claypool, Curtis Samuel, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Justin Shorter. Shakir is the only receiver on this list who caught a pass from Allen last season.

Despite many changes for Buffalo, Gennaro Filice of nfl.com still believes the Bills will be a top ten contender in 2024.

Filice ranked the Bills as the 8th best offense ahead of the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts. The only factor that put the Bills on this list according to Filice is none other than Josh Allen. Filice discussed how Allen has led the NFL in total touchdowns since 2020 with 174 total and how he has been one of the highest-rated quarterbacks in recent memory.

This is simply called the “Josh Allen Effect.” He is a dynamic athlete who plays in the most important position on the field, who can overcome defenders coming at him. Even though he’s getting older, he shows no signs of stopping. Filice is proving a belief in what the Bills offense will look like next season despite all the major renovations it underwent this offseason.
