Burlington man dead after collision with train

Officers determined the accident occurred on the railroad track west of York Road toward Oak Avenue.

BURLINGTON, NC — Police said they are investigating after a man was killed in a collision with a train in Burlington.

Burlington police said they were contacted by Elon police around 8 p.m. Thursday about a pedestrian who was struck by a train that was believed to be within Burlington city limits.

Officers determined the accident occurred on the railroad track west of York Road toward Oak Avenue.

Police identified the victim as Daniel Cameron Wagoner, 47, of Burlington.

According to officials, initial reports indicated that Wagoner was traveling eastbound on the tracks when the oncoming train approached, resulting in an accident.

Investigators said the train was traveling at a lower speed than planned and tried to warn Wagoner with its horn.

Officials said Wagoner’s death was pronounced at the scene.

The railway line was closed for about three hours.
