Police rule out use of firearms in vandalism case at Hillcrest nonprofit

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Hillcrest organization that supports the trans community has reported that someone shot at their window earlier this month and they can’t afford to have it repaired.

Trans Fronteras San Diego provides services such as food and lodging for transgender people.

Guadalupe Castillón-Mendoza, the head of the organization, described the terrifying incident: “It was like a huge explosion in the room. I thought to myself: ‘Oh my God. We were being shot at.'”

Although the organization considered moving for security reasons, it decided to stay and continue its work. “We are here. We are not going anywhere,” Castillón-Mendoza said.

The group has planned several events for Pride Month and will march in the parade.

San Diego police have ruled out that a firearm was used in the incident.

“It may have been an air pistol, but no air pistol was found between the first and second window panes, which is odd,” authorities said in a statement to 10News on Monday.

“We cannot determine how the window was broken or who is responsible for the damage,” police added.

Officials said they do not suspect this case is connected to the gel pellet incident that targeted LGBTQ+ nightclubs in the Hillcrest area in May.
