Charges filed against suspect after shooting at Houston police officers | Texas

HPD Officers J. Luna, D. Zhu and Probationary Police Officer B. Martel, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured during the incident. Officers Luna, Zhu, and Martel are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in August 2021, March 2019, and June 2024, respectively.

Detectives C. Walker and H. Le of the HPD Special Investigations Unit reported that HPD patrol officers responded to a domestic dispute with a weapons call at a residence at the above address after that a caller reported that the suspect, her boyfriend’s father, was drunk and threatening harm. her, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s juvenile sister with a handgun. The officers arrived and were able to remove the caller, her boyfriend and his sister from the residence safely, without the suspect’s knowledge. Officers then made contact with the suspect, later identified as Gallegos.

Gallegos repeatedly came out of the front door and spoke with the officers, but refused to open the iron gate. About an hour later, Gallegos opened the front door, pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officers outside. Gallegos fired at least once at the officers, who returned fire. Gallegos then went back inside the residence. Nobody was hit. The officers took cover and waited for HPD SWAT officers to arrive.

About an hour later, Gallegos was arrested by SWAT officers without further incident. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and Gallegos was subsequently charged for his role in the incident.

As is typical in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents within the city limits of Houston, this matter is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the internal affairs division.
