Fetterman hospitalized after car crash in Maryland

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) was reportedly hit and hospitalized Sunday morning after he was driving and rear-ended another car.

According to Fox 29 Philadelphia, Fetterman and his wife Gisele were traveling near Hancock, Maryland, when the car Fetterman was driving collided with a Chevy Impala.

The couple was subsequently taken to a hospital in West Virginia “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a statement from Fetterman’s office provided to the broadcaster.

Fetterman was treated at the hospital for a bruised shoulder. He and his wife were released later that day and have since returned to their hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania, according to the senator’s office.

The senator’s health has been a constant concern throughout his term in office after he suffered a stroke during his 2022 campaign that left him unable to speak for a period of time. Shortly after returning to public life following his stroke, he again resigned from his role in the Senate to seek clinical treatment for depression.

Fetterman recently spoke about his stroke on Bill Maher’s HBO show Real timeand told Maher that his stroke had given him the “freedom” to abandon progressive political goals and ignore criticism from his fellow Democrats.

“There is a line from the first Batman, Joker, he says, “I’ve been dead before. This is very freeing,” Fetterman told the comedian. “This isn’t reckless, this is just freeing. It’s just freeing in a way. And I think after I’ve gotten through all this, I just really want to be able to say the things that I really need to believe in and not be afraid if there’s any kind of backlash.”

This story has been updated to reflect the fact that Fetterman rear-ended the other driver.
