Houston Astros’ Kyle Tucker out against St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday after fouling his shin

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Astros earned a comeback victory against their old National League Central rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, on Monday, but it may have come at a cost.

Right fielder Kyle Tucker left in the third inning of Houston’s 7-4 victory after fouling a ball to his right shin.

Tucker fell to his hands and knees after the ball bounced off his leg, just below the knee. He remained in this position for several minutes while a trainer and manager, Joe Espada, monitored him.

He slowly stood up and took a few steps toward first base, where he seemed to be limping. He put his batting helmet back on but quickly decided he couldn’t continue his fight. He was replaced by pinch hitter Mauricio Dubón.

The Astros officially considered Tucker, who is tied for second in baseball’s home run race at 19, on a day-to-day basis.

Tucker said after the game that he was fine.

“We did some X-rays and nothing was broken or anything,” he said. “So I’m sure we’ll do a few more things (Tuesday) and so on. Right now it just hurts a little bit, but it’s all good, we’ll get through this.”

The Astros’ injuries throughout the lineup have been well-documented this season, where Houston enters Tuesday with a 27-34 record and third in the American League West.

Tuesday night, Dubón plays in Tucker’s place in right field for the second of three games against St. Louis.
