Jaipur, June 3 (PTI) – Six men were arrested and a youth detained for allegedly raping a minor and extorting money from her in Ajmer district of Rajasthan, police said on Monday.

A case was registered in the matter on May 31. Two persons, including the main accused Irfan, were arrested and a juvenile was taken into custody on Sunday, SP Devendra Vishnoi said.

Circle Collector (North) and Investigation Officer Rudra Prakash Sharma said four more persons were arrested today.

The accused had befriended an underage girl through social media in December. He asked for the password of her Instagram ID and sent messages and altered photos of the girl to her friends, he said.

Irfan raped and blackmailed her. The crime lasted for three to four months. Later, he started extorting money from the girl, Sharma said, adding that the other accused were his accomplices and their role was being investigated.

SP Vishnoi said the victim’s father noticed that the girl was stealing money, after which he questioned her and the matter came to light.

Ajmer IG Lata Manoj Kumar has set up an SIT to investigate the case in detail and find out if there are any other victims.

Meanwhile, the BJP held a protest rally in front of the SP office and demanded tough action against the accused.

BJP district president Ramesh Soni said the case must be investigated thoroughly to ensure that cases like the 1992 sex and extortion scandal, in which many girls were raped and blackmailed, are not repeated.

Neeraj Jain, deputy mayor of Ajmer Municipal Corporation, said the police should widen the scope of investigation to find out how many more accused were involved in the case besides those named in the FIR.

“In 1992, too, many girls fell into the trap. They were raped and blackmailed,” he said.
