Illinois State Police are investigating two deaths involving police officers

Illinois State Police investigators are looking into several police-involved deaths that occurred in Marion and East Alton over the past week.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Department notified state police investigators on Sunday of the death of a motorcyclist who crashed during a chase.

According to state police, deputies and officers from the Herrin and Energy police departments were pursuing the fleeing motorcycle on Illinois Route 13 around 12:50 a.m. Sunday when the motorcycle collided with a parked sheriff’s vehicle on Carbon Street in Marion.

According to a police report, the unidentified motorcyclist died at the scene of the accident.

State police investigators said Saturday they were asked to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday in East Alton.

According to police, officers with the East Alton Police Department were called to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of Lakeside Avenue around 11:31 p.m.

When East Alton and Bethalto police officers arrived and exited their vehicles, they reported someone shooting at them inside a home. None of the officers were injured. They returned fire and called the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System Special Response Team for help when the gunman barricaded himself inside the home, a state police report said.

Shannon Musgraves, 47, of East Alton was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy revealed it was the only gunshot wound he sustained during the incident.

State police said their findings would be presented to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office once completed.

According to state police, no further details were released.
