Dylan Dreyer recalls the incident that resulted in her family not being allowed to take iPads in the car

Still reeling from an unfortunate motion sickness incident from December 2023, 3rd hour of TODAY co-host Dylan Dreyer has vowed never to allow her young children to use screens in the car again.

“Calvin was once in the car on a trip to Boston watching an iPad and then he threw up,” Dylan said on the show on May 27. “To take something like that out of a car seat is absolutely gross, right?”

At 7, Calvin Fichera is the oldest of three boys Dylan has with her husband Brian Fichera. Their middle son, Oliver, is 4, and youngest son, Rusty, is 2.

Dylan had already described the “incredibly disgusting” motion sickness incident in detail in an Instagram post on December 5.

“Car seats should come with some sort of puke-proof cover. Something that’s easy to clean because every kid will inevitably puke in every nook and cranny of that thing,” she captioned the photo.

“So no iPads in the car,” concluded Dylan, as she chatted with her co-hosts about the record-breaking amount of travel on Memorial Day. Reading on car rides is also prohibited.

Instead, she said: “We will sing! In the good old style of ‘The Shrill Four on the Road’.”

Craig Melvin takes a slightly different approach when he’s on a road trip with his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and children, Delano and Sybil. They switch between the kids’ playlists so that each child’s favorite music is playing over the speakers.

“But we’ve also started listening to stories – audio books,” Craig added. “We want the kids to be exposed to different things.”

“I remember listening to ‘Harry Potter,'” said Al Roker. His three children are now grown, but he has fond memories of audiobook narrator Jim Dale reading the stories to his family.

Sheinelle Jones said her husband, Uche Ojeh, and their three children play word games and “concentration” in the car.

“We also sing. Everyone can choose a song,” she said.

“It drives my husband crazy,” Sheinelle added.

The family has a love of musicals and favorites are “Moana,” “Hamilton,” and “In the Heights.”
