Jennifer Pan’s brother Felix described his sister’s plan to murder her parents as a “dark shadow.” Here he stands today.

  • Jennifer Pan was found guilty of conspiracy to murder her parents.

  • Her younger brother Felix was not present on the night of the staged burglary in 2010.

  • During her trial, he testified that he could not “hide” from the incident.

What Jennifer Did is a new Netflix true-crime documentary that follows the aftermath of a staged 2010 home invasion that left Bich Ha Pan of Markham, Ontario, dead and her husband Huei Hann Pan injured.

As the documentary reports, the incident was actually staged by the couple’s daughter, Jennifer Pan, then 24. After living under her parents’ control as a teenager, fooling them into believing she was studying as a young adult, and finally being exposed, Pan conspired with her ex-boyfriend Daniel Wong to hire hitmen to kill her parents.

Pan was found guilty of premeditated murder and attempted murder in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years. In 2023, the Ontario Court of Appeal ordered a retrial on the first-degree murder charge, arguing that the judge in the original case did not offer the jury other options, including second-degree murder and manslaughter. The appeal is currently before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Pan wasn’t Bich and Hann’s only child – she has a younger brother named Felix. Here’s how he was involved in her trial and where he stands today.

Felix Pan was not present on the night of his mother’s murder

Toronto Life, in an article about Pan’s life and subsequent crime, reported that Felix was born in 1989, three years after Pan. He lived with his sister, father and mother in Markham, Ontario, outside Toronto. The Toronto Sun reported that Felix attended private school as a child, while Pan attended public school.

While Pan lied about attending university, forging certificates and pretending to take classes in Toronto, Felix was studying engineering at McMaster University. He was not at home on the evening of the incident in November 2010, Toronto Life reported.

That evening, three men entered the Pans’ house and threatened Bich and Hann with guns. They eventually shot Bich in the head, killing her. They shot Hann in the shoulder and face, and he survived.

Hann’s memory of the evening after he woke up from an induced coma raised further suspicions about Pan. He recalled his daughter chatting casually with one of the men and walking around the house unfettered, despite her saying she had been tied up and eventually tied to a stair railing. Pan was arrested after her third interview with police, and finally, according to Toronto Life, her co-accused – Wong and the three men who had entered the Pans’ home – were arrested in the spring of 2011.

Felix testified in the trial against his sister

The Toronto Sun reported that Felix appeared as a witness during Pan’s trial. During his testimony, he said he did not doubt Pan’s lies about her studies and answered affirmatively when asked if he “loves” and “respects” her.

Felix also reportedly said during the trial that he and Pan had a “closer bond” with their mother than with their father. He told the lawyers that he felt he could “talk to her about things.” With his father, however, things were different.

“Dad was very old-fashioned… He was very controlling,” Felix said during the trial, according to the publication. “That’s just my dad… It’s kind of tough love.”

Felix also wrote a victim impact statement that was read in court on the day of Pan’s sentencing, although he did not appear in court at the time. According to the Toronto Sun, he said in his statement that if employers searched for him online now, they would find information about his sister’s crime.

“Like a dark shadow, this is something I can’t hide from,” Felix wrote. “I lost my mother.”

Toronto Life reported in 2015 that Felix had moved to the east coast of Canada. A LinkedIn account that appears to belong to him shows that he has moved back to the Toronto area and works in Markham. He does not appear in “What Jennifer Did.”
