(NewsNation) — David Knezevich, the estranged husband of Ana Maria Knezevich Henao, was arrested at Miami International Airport in connection with the disappearance of his wife, who went missing in Spain in early February.

Knezevich was arrested Monday morning on kidnapping charges Says the Spanish police The arrest was made “due to his alleged connection to the disappearance of his wife.”

Henao, 40, had been living in Spain on and off since the summer after her marriage to Serbian-American businessman Knezevich collapsed. As part of her efforts to deal with her impending divorce, she traveled to Madrid.

The Florida woman was reported missing on February 5 after she was unable to meet up with a friend to travel from Madrid to Barcelona. Concerns escalated when Spanish authorities searched her apartment and found no evidence of a robbery.

The disappearance occurred on the same night that an unknown person was seen destroying security cameras at Henao’s residence with spray paint, further complicating the investigation.

When news of Henao’s disappearance broke, many pointed the finger at her estranged husband. However, his attorney told NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo that Knezevich has cooperated with the investigation.

“He helped the authorities and helped them in every way he could. “I don’t know if you can assume that he’s flying to another country, that he doesn’t speak the language, that he doesn’t have a place to stay and that somehow that makes the search any better than it’s already going,” said Knezevich attorney Ken Padowitz.

Knezevich claims he had nothing to do with his wife’s disappearance. He appeared at a hearing Monday at a downtown Miami courthouse where prosecutors asked for pretrial detention because of the alleged flight risk.

The allegations against Knezevich are set forth in the complaint below.
