Maryland police officer charged and suspended after collision with pedestrian in patrol car

LAUREL, MD — A grand jury today indicted Corporal Dexter Shin, a suspended Prince George’s County patrol officer, on a charge of abuse of authority. The charges stem from an incident on March 3 when Shin allegedly struck a pedestrian with his patrol car in Laurel and failed to report the collision or ensure the pedestrian received proper medical attention.

Following the incident, the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division launched an investigation. The findings were later presented to the District Attorney’s Office and culminated in today’s charges. Shin was immediately suspended after the department learned of the incident.

Police Chief Malik Aziz expressed his concern, saying the allegations were “deeply disturbing” and contrary to the department’s ethical standards.

He stressed that the alleged conduct does not contradict the integrity of the department’s personnel. Aziz also mentioned that if the allegations are confirmed, he will work for full accountability in the administrative process.

Corporal Shin, who joined the force in 2017 and is assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, remains suspended pending the outcome of the court case.
