No bail for 15-year-old now charged as an adult in Hialeah crash that killed two women – NBC 6 South Florida

A 15-year-old who was allegedly traveling in his parents’ car when he struck an SUV in Hialeah, killing a woman and her aunt, was ordered held without bail during his first appearance in adult court Wednesday.

Maykoll Santiesteban was in court for the hearing a day after prosecutors formally filed adult charges against him, including two counts of vehicular manslaughter, one count of reckless driving and three counts of driving on a revoked license causing harm.

His defense attorney tried to convince the bond court judge that Santiesteban should be placed on house arrest, arguing that the eighth-grader had no criminal history and was not a flight risk.

“This is his first contact with the legal system,” said defense attorney Omar Lopez. “Mr Santiesteban did not run away, dodge or resist her arrest.”

But Judge Mindy Glazer said the teen posed a possible danger to the community and ordered him to remain behind bars without bail.

“I believe that Mr. Santiesteban is a danger to the community. “He killed two people by consciously choosing to drive a motor vehicle without a license and without permission, essentially driving it into the ground,” Glazer said.

Police said Santiesteban was driving over 80 mph in a 30 mph zone while joyriding with friends on April 23 when he plowed into another car, killing aunt and niece Yarina Garcia and Gloria Hernandez.

The family returned to the crash site Saturday to remember the lives of Yarina Garcia Hernandez and Gloria Hernandez Molina.

A third woman, Liliana Hernandez Molina, Hernandez’s mother and Garcia’s sister, is still in critical condition and trying to recover from the crash.

The judge said Wednesday that Santiesteban made a terrible decision to take his parents’ car.

“Obviously this eighth grader, who is a good student, took a stolen car from his parents without their permission and made a very poor decision,” Glazer said.
