(NewsNation) — The start of National Police Week coincides with a troubling trend of increasing police deaths. At least five officers were shot in shootings across the country over the weekend, including one who died.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 58 police officers have lost their lives in the line of duty so far this year, and 22 have been killed by gunfire.

The latest loss occurred over the weekend, while several other officers were injured while responding to calls across the country.

Police shootings in Ohio

Officer Jacob Derbin of Euclid, Ohio, was shot and killed in an ambush-style attack on Saturday. The 23-year-old military veteran and fiancé served on the police force for less than two years.

The Euclid Police Department said it is devastated by this loss.

“This is a senseless tragedy that didn’t have to happen. Our sympathies and deepest condolences go out to Officer Durbin, his family and all of our officers in the Euclid Police Department family,” said Euclid Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail.

The suspected gunman, identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was killed after he was caught in a nationwide manhunt, authorities said Sunday.

He was found dead at an address in Shaker Heights on Sunday. An investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He was heavily armed. It is still unclear how the man was killed, police said.

Meanwhile, a Columbus, Ohio, police officer was shot and injured while arresting a suspect at an Amazon facility on Sunday.

Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, said several officers shot at the suspect, killing him, NewsNation affiliate WCMH-TV reported.

The officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The suspect died during the encounter.

Atlanta police shootings

In Georgia, three Atlanta police officers were injured after responding to a call that left a suspect dead Saturday night, authorities said.

“During this encounter, a fight ensued and gunfire ensued, resulting in three of our officers being injured. It also resulted in the death of the person armed with the pistol,” Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said during a news conference.

Police did not initially identify the suspect. The police do not believe that anyone else is involved, said Schierbaum.

They were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One officer was shot in the shoulder, another was shot in the leg and the third suffered a graze wound. Two of the officers are expected to undergo surgery, Schierbaum said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting, he said.

Meanwhile, the police are not only confronted with gun violence on duty: an officer was hit in his patrol car at an intersection in Rochester, New York by a drunk driver. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 22 officers have died in automobile events this year.

What is National Police Week?

National Police Week takes place from May 12th to 18th this year.

National Police Week recognizes police officers who do so much to keep their communities safe and recognizes those who have given their lives in the line of duty. However, experts emphasize the impact of stress on work.
