ECP suspends Sindh MPAs elected on reserved seats

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday suspended Sindh Assembly lawmakers elected in reserved seats after the Supreme Court overturned the Peshawar High Court (PHC) verdict to deprive the Sunni Ittehad Council of seats reserved for women and minorities were.

According to the ECP’s notification, Sumita Syed Afzal and Sadhumal Surendar Valasai of the PPP and MQM-P leader Musarrat Jabeen have been suspended.

On May 7, a three-judge SC bench headed by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah said that the interim order only covered the disputed seats viz.

“The issue of allocation of reserved seats in the national and provincial assemblies affects the fundamental constitutional concept of a parliamentary democracy that the voice of the electorate is effectively expressed in the composition of the assemblies,” the order said.
