MLB announces tragic death of pitcher Reyes Moronta after car accident

Longtime MLB pitcher Reyes Moronta tragically passed away over the weekend in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic. Moronta was 31 years old. According to the Associated Press, Moronta was riding his motorcycle when he was involved in a traffic accident.

News of Moronta’s death circulated on social media Sunday evening, sparking an outpouring of heartfelt condolences from the devastated baseball community.

Moronta had an impressive ERA of 3.05 (10-11) and 202 strikeouts in the 177 games of his Major League Baseball career.

In six seasons (2017-2023), Moronta played in the Major Leagues for the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers. Most recently, he played for the Bravos de León of the Mexican League, who only released the player on July 25.

The Bravos confirmed the pitcher’s tragic death with a post on X, the caption of which read: “We deeply regret the departure of Reyes Moronta. We wish family and friends a quick farewell to this new guy. Hugs to heaven.”

The Dominican team Aguilas Cibaenas, which recently signed Moronta, also announced the player’s unfortunate death. “We deeply regret the unexpected death of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who died yesterday,” the statement said.
