Man arrested Sunday afternoon after fatal shooting in north Springfield

A Springfield man is in jail on suspicion of shooting another man early Sunday morning.

Isaiah Daniel Church, 34, was arrested on the afternoon of July 28 on a charge of first-degree murder. He is accused of shooting 31-year-old D’Vaunte Tavon Grant of Texas, according to a Springfield police news release. The charges were not yet available on the Greene County District Court website Sunday evening.

Police responded to a business in the 400 block of East Kearney Street at 3:22 a.m. Sunday, where they found evidence of a shooting, according to a police report. Grant was taken to a Springfield hospital by a citizen before police arrived; Grant died of his injuries a short time later.

Investigators identified Church as a suspect in the shooting. Acting on a tip, officers found Church at a home in the 1350 block of North Lexington Avenue on Sunday afternoon, the news release said. After a brief standoff, Church reportedly left the home and was arrested.

This is the seventh murder investigation and the ninth person in Springfield whose cause of death is ruled a homicide in 2024.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, according to Springfield police. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 417-864-1810, an anonymous tip line at 417-869-8477 or p3tips.com.
